 Raw sewage and wastewater typically contain bacteria, funguses, parasites and viruses that can cause intestinal, lung and other infections such as gastroenteritis and even the sometimes fatal Weil's disease. Occupations which make exposure possible or even likely include:
- Employees of water companies and wastewater plants
- Workers charged with inspecting, maintaining, repairing sewers or aircraft sewage compartments
- Agricultural workers
- Sludge tank drivers
The best way for a worker to protect themselves is by: - Always cleaning their hands with an antibacterial agent before eating, smoking or drinking
